Across the Pond! Moving to the US with Pets!

Tuesday, December 16, 2008 by Rachel Farris
Traveling with your pet from the UK to the US is much easier than going the other way. Today on AllExperts.com, we had a question from Mel who was inquiring on how to bring her dog into the pet friendly United States.

Hi,
I'm relocating to North Carolina and I want to take my 3yr old Westie with me. I have a couple of questions
The first is will he have to go into quarantine when he arrives?
The second is how will he travel and what kind of cost will there be.
Many thanks in antcipation
Mel

Hi Mel,

Thanks for your email. I have good news for you. Your Westie will not need to go into quarantine upon arrival. All that is required for entry into the US is an international health certificate within 10 days of travel and proof of current vaccinations and a rabies shot given more than 30 days before flight, but less than a year. You will be able to take your dog directly home as soon as he arrives.
It's okay if you do not have time to fulfill the requirement for the rabies shot. That doesn't mean that your dog can't come with you to the US. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), if you bring a dog into the US that is not vaccinated for rabies, you will need to fill out a "confinement agreement" and show that document (if asked) at the port of entry. For more information on this, go to the CDC page regarding importing pets: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal.htm
Then, scroll down to the "Dogs" section. You will see the confinement agreement listed in that section as an Adobe file that you can download and fill out ahead of time.

The confinement agreement basically says that upon your arrival in the US, you will keep your dog confined in-home -- you are not agreeing to send him into quarantine. You will be able to clear through customs with your pup and take him home with you, just please make sure you keep him away from other animals until the 30 days is up.

As for how he will travel, you have a few different options. You can either have him travel in the cabin (if he's small enough), as accompanied baggage (depending on the time of year you plan on flying) or as cargo (if you don't plan on traveling with him).
Accompanied baggage is generally the cheapest - you basically are checking your dog and paying an extra fee(around $100, depending on the airline). However, during the winter and summer months it can be somewhat unreliable because airlines will not fly your dog as accompanied baggage if the weather is below 45 degrees or over 85 degrees upon departure or arrival. This is something to ask your airline about.

As far as costs for PetRelocation's services, without knowing specific departure and arrival cities, it's hard to give you an exact cost. However, it would likely be around two thousand dollars or more for a Westie-sized dog to be imported into the US.

Please let me know of any other questions!

Happy travels & wagging tails!

Kind regards,
Rachel Farris
