AllExperts: Entering Canada with Pets from the US on Holiday Road Trip?

Subject: Pet Traveling and Passing through the US on the way home (to Canada)

Question: We moved from Toronto to Edmonton Canada in the summer to take a short-term contract. We packed up our two cats and drove through Canada (via Ontario and the Prairies). The guys held up like troopers. So successful in fact that we're comfortable taking them on the drive back home around Christmas time. We'd like to shave a day off the otherwise 5 day trip by dipping through the US from ND to Detroit but we're unsure about what's going to happen at the border. What will we need to do to ensure we can enter and then leave the States with our cats? We'll be about 1-2 days passing through. Thanks in advance.

Answer: Hello Dan!

If you plan on driving, you should not have any problems. Getting into the US, it is recommended that your cats have valid health certificates and rabies certificates dated within 10 days of entry. Going back into Canada, you will need these same forms as well as something stating your reason for entering Canada, which could be something just as simple as stating you are Canadian residents and are going back home with your pets. Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, our Domestic Specialist, Marcus, would be happy to give you more information. Email us for more details! Happy holidays and have a safe drive!
