Pop Quiz: Is this travel crate big enough for the dog in it?

Petrelocation.com - We recently had an inquiry from our customer about picking the right dog crate size for her dog Pasha. She sent in this picture of Pasha in his crate and asked for our expert opinion.

At first glance, this size looked to be about right. Pasha is sitting comfortably upright and can see out the door without having to duck his head. With regards to height, this crate size is perfect.

However, based just on this picture, it was difficult to tell if the length would be right for him. We asked the owner to take a measurement of Pasha from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail and then asked her to measure the length of the crate. She determined that Pasha was 27 inches long and the crate was 29 inches long, giving Pasha only 2 inches to stretch out.

If Pasha were only traveling on a short domestic flight this might be acceptable, but Pasha is a dog being shipped to China. He has got a long way to go in that crate. If his paws are even slightly crammed up against the crate door when he lies down, he could be one very unhappy and uncomfortable pup.

So the answer to the quiz is NO, this crate is not big enough.  We recommended the client pick out a crate that is around 4 inches longer for Pasha to be able to lie down comfortably.

When in doubt: It is always a good idea to go with the next crate size up if there are any questions about your pet's comfort being compromised.

I wish they measured human dimensions this way on flights! That said, I empathize with Pasha's plight.
